What to Wear Between Seasons: Japanese Indigo for Autumn Journeys
A cool morning. A warm patch of sunlight. An evening you decide to spend outdoors a little longer.
Some of the loveliest days to travel are also the hardest to pack for.
For an autumn city break or a few days visiting friends, start with clothes you already love. Then add a layer you can take off, fold away, and reach for again.
At IKI LUCA, we make journey wear in Kurume, on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu. Our clothes bring a local weaving tradition into the rhythms of life today: catching a train, finding a small café, taking the long way home.
Here are two ways to bring Japanese indigo into your autumn wardrobe.
Start with the journey, then choose your layers
Before you pack, check the forecast for both daytime highs and evening lows. Think about how much of your day you will spend outside, too.
For mild weather, a T-shirt or light long-sleeved top gives you a simple starting point. Add a layer for early departures, shaded streets, and the journey back after dinner.
For colder destinations, build around a warmer base and bring a coat. If rain is expected, pack a suitable rain layer as well.
Lay out two outfits before they go into your bag. Can the same outer layer work with both? That small question can make packing much easier.
A cape that changes with your day
The IKI LUCA indigo cape weighs less than 200 grams—about 7 ounces—and is made from 100% cotton Kurume Kasuri. Twelve buttons let you change its shape, wearing it as a cape or arranging it as a long stole.
Try it over a white T-shirt and trousers for a relaxed afternoon. With a long-sleeved top, it becomes another way to wear the same favorite pieces as the season turns.
Drape it over your shoulders while you sit with a coffee. Fold it into your bag when you set off again.
There is pleasure in a piece you can make your own: a different fold, a different button, a different way to wear it tomorrow.

A haori jacket, from the afternoon into the evening
If you prefer a jacket, our deep indigo haori offers another approach.
A haori is a traditional Japanese outer garment. IKI LUCA’s version brings that inspiration into a jacket you can wear with the rest of your wardrobe.
It is made from 100% cotton Kurume Kasuri, with naturally indigo-dyed weft yarns—the threads woven across the fabric—and discreet pockets for cards.
Wear it with a pale top, trousers, and comfortable shoes for a day of exploring. Later, try it over a simple dress for dinner. As the days grow cooler, a fine knit offers another combination.
The deep blue gives these familiar clothes a new point of interest. You can leave room in your bag for something other than another outfit.

Meet Kurume Kasuri
Kurume Kasuri is a cotton textile tradition with more than 220 years of history in Fukuoka, Japan. Its production involves more than 30 stages, carried out by skilled artisans.
The name is often associated with patterned cloth, but the tradition also includes plain and striped fabrics. IKI LUCA works with this quieter side of Kasuri, creating clothes that fit naturally into a modern wardrobe.
You do not need to dress differently to wear something with a history.
It can be the blue over your everyday T-shirt. The fabric you reach for before leaving the house. A small connection to another place, carried into your own life.

Take the long way home
Some journeys begin at an airport. Others begin when you turn down a street you have never walked before.
Go where your heart pulls you. See the people you miss. Do what calls you.
And bring a piece you enjoy wearing along the way.
